EMDR Therapy in Dubai
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, a breakthrough evidence-based approach for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, phobias, and more.
What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories. Using bilateral stimulation, guided eye movements or gentle tapping, EMDR enables the brain to integrate traumatic experiences so they lose their emotional charge.
Developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR is now endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Psychological Association (APA), and NICE (UK) as a first-line treatment for PTSD. Research consistently shows it works faster than many traditional talk therapies, often producing lasting results in fewer sessions.
Importantly, EMDR does not erase memories. What changes is their grip: the event is still recalled, but it stops triggering the same physical alarm response in the present.

Who Can Benefit from EMDR?
EMDR helps where distress is anchored in past experience. That includes trauma and PTSD, but also anxiety, phobias, grief, and long-standing negative beliefs about yourself that have not shifted through talking alone.
Trauma & PTSD
Single-incident and complex trauma, including childhood experiences.
Anxiety & Panic
Generalised anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, and OCD.
Phobias
Specific phobias rooted in past experiences or conditioned responses.
Grief & Loss
Complicated grief, bereavement, and loss of identity.
Relationship Trauma
Patterns from past relationships, abandonment, and attachment wounds.
Low Self-Worth
Negative core beliefs about the self that resist change with talk therapy alone.

EMDR at Enliven Counselling Center
Dr. Fatima integrates EMDR into a trauma-informed framework shaped by 20+ years of clinical experience. EMDR at Enliven is never rushed. The process begins with thorough preparation, building your internal resources and ensuring you feel safe and in control before any reprocessing begins.
Sessions are available in-person at our Dubai clinic (INK Hotel, Al Jadaf), at Aljada in Sharjah, and online via secure video for clients across the UAE. Dr. Fatima works in English and Arabic, and sessions are adapted to your pace, culture, and specific goals.
Where preparation reveals that stabilisation should come first, EMDR is sequenced into a broader plan of trauma therapy in Dubai rather than started prematurely.
What to Expect in an EMDR Session
Assessment & Preparation
Dr. Fatima builds a full picture of your history and goals. Together you develop coping tools and establish safety before processing begins.
Reprocessing
Using guided bilateral stimulation, you revisit the target memory in a structured, contained way. The brain begins to integrate and file the experience differently.
Closure & Integration
Each session ends with grounding. Between sessions, the brain continues to process. Many clients notice shifts in their thinking, sleep, and emotional responses.
How Is EMDR Different from Talk Therapy?
EMDR works through the brain’s memory-processing system rather than through discussion. It usually requires less verbal disclosure and a shorter course for single-incident trauma, which is why it is often chosen when talking about an event feels impossible.
| Factor | EMDR | Traditional talk therapy |
|---|---|---|
| Primary mechanism | Reprocessing memories via bilateral stimulation | Insight and cognitive restructuring through discussion |
| Verbal disclosure | Minimal, you need not narrate the event in detail | Central, progress depends on talking it through |
| Typical course (single-incident) | 6-12 sessions | 12-20 sessions |
| Best suited to | Trauma, PTSD, phobias, stored stress responses | Current-life stressors, patterns, decision-making |
Neither approach is universally better. Many clients at Enliven use both, with EMDR targeting specific memories inside a wider course of therapy.
Is EMDR Right for Everyone?
No, and an honest assessment matters more than starting quickly. EMDR is highly effective for most trauma presentations, but for some people it should be sequenced after a period of stabilisation rather than used as the opening approach.
Often a strong fit
- A clear memory or event that still triggers distress
- Talking about the event feels impossible or retraumatising
- Talk therapy has helped you understand the problem but not shift it
- Phobias or panic with an identifiable origin
Usually sequenced later
- Ongoing crisis, or a living situation that is still unsafe
- Very limited capacity to tolerate distress without support in place
- Active substance dependence that would interrupt processing
- Certain medical conditions, which Dr. Fatima will discuss with you directly
None of these rule EMDR out permanently. They change the order of the work, usually beginning with stabilisation inside a broader course of trauma therapy. The discovery session is where that judgement is made.
How Much Does EMDR Therapy Cost in Dubai?
A discovery session is AED 500 for 50 minutes. Individual EMDR sessions are AED 650. Session bundles reduce the per-session rate: five sessions for AED 3,000 and twenty sessions for AED 10,000.
Because EMDR often resolves single-incident trauma in fewer sessions than open-ended talk therapy, the total course cost is frequently lower, though this depends entirely on what you are working through.
